Our history

Transforming a Landmark:

From Island Cinemas 10 to
Newport Pickleball Club and
The KITCHEN Table

In January 2023, the cherished Island Cinemas 10 announced its closure after decades of serving as a community entertainment hub. Understanding the significance of this venue, we embarked on a mission to preserve its legacy. Our goal is to continue the site's tradition as a year-round gathering place, offering residents and visitors a new space to connect.

Our state-of-the-art facility embodies this vision, offering premier courts, a vibrant bar and restaurant, and a welcoming environment that honors pickleball's rich history alongside Island Cinema’s legacy.

ABOUT PICKLEBALL

  • What is Pickleball?

Pickleball is a fast-growing paddle sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Played on a smaller court with a slightly lower net, it uses a paddle and a perforated plastic ball, similar to a wiffle ball. Pickleball can be played as singles or doubles, making it versatile and accessible for players of all ages and skill levels.

  • How Did Pickleball Start?

Pickleball was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by three dads—Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum—looking to entertain their families. They improvised using a badminton court, a lowered net, ping-pong paddles, and a perforated ball. Over time, rules were formalized, and the sport evolved into the competitive game we know today.

  • Who Plays Pickleball?

    Pickleball’s popularity spans all demographics:

    • Athletes: Tennis players and athletes from other sports are drawn to pickleball’s speed and strategy.
    • Kids and Families: Great for introducing younger players to sports.
